Review by Pepa de Leyva

Tonight We Walked With Giants, the third and final album by American punk rock band Big Black, is a masterpiece of raw, aggressive energy and political commentary. Released in 1986, the album features Steve Albini on guitar and vocals, Santiago Durango on guitar, Dave Riley on bass, and Roland on drums.

The album opens with the track "Colombian Necktie," which sets the tone for the entire album with its dissonant guitar riffs, pounding drums, and Albini's snarling vocals. The lyrics tackle issues of violence and power, with lines like "I'll cut you ear to ear and leave you lying in the street."

Other standout tracks include "Bad Houses," which features a catchy guitar riff and a driving bassline, and "Fists of Love," which showcases Albini's unique vocal style and biting wit. The album also includes a cover of Kraftwerk's "The Model," which Big Black transforms into a dark and brooding track.

American punk rock band from Evanston, Illinois, active from 1981 to 1987. Founded by singer and guitarist Steve Albini, the band's initial lineup also included guitarist Santiago Durango and bassist Jeff Pezzati, both of Naked Raygun. In 1985, Pezzati was replaced by Dave Riley. Big Black's aggressive and abrasive music was characterized by distinctively clanky guitars and the use of a drum machine rather than a drum kit. The band's lyrics flouted commonly held taboos and dealt franklyand often explicitlywith politically and culturally loaded topics including murder, rape, child sexual abuse, arson, racism, and misogyny. Though the band's lyrics contained controversial material, the lyrics were meant to serve as a commentary or a display of distaste for the subject matter. They were staunchly critical of the commercial nature of rock, shunning the mainstream music industry and insisting on complete control over all aspects of their career. They booked their own tours, paid for their own recordings, refused to sign contracts, and eschewed many of the traditional corporate trappings of rock bands.
