Review by Cam Cecchini

Iberia, the masterpiece by Spanish composer Isaac Albéniz, is a stunning collection of twelve piano pieces that capture the essence of Spain. The album, which was composed between 1905 and 1909, is a musical journey through the landscapes, traditions, and rhythms of the Iberian Peninsula.

The album opens with Evocación, a gentle and melancholic piece that sets the tone for the rest of the album. The subsequent pieces, El Puerto and Fête-dieu à Seville, are lively and festive, evoking the vibrant atmosphere of the Andalusian cities. The fourth piece, Corpus Christi en Sevilla, is a majestic and solemn march that celebrates the religious festival of Corpus Christi.

Albéniz's virtuosity as a pianist is showcased in the intricate and complex rhythms of the fifth piece, Rondeña, and the seventh piece, Triana. The latter is a lively and energetic piece that pays homage to the district of Triana in Seville, known for its flamenco and gypsy culture.

The eighth piece, El Albaicín, is a haunting and mystical piece that evokes the atmosphere of the Moorish quarter of Granada. The following pieces, El Polo and Lavapiés, are more introspective and subdued, reflecting the melancholic side of Spanish culture.

The album closes with two of Albéniz's most famous pieces, Málaga and Jerez, which are both lively and festive, full of virtuosic runs and intricate rhythms.
