Review by Kaloud

The Best Of Rough Trade Birds Of A Feather is a must-have album for any fan of the Canadian punk scene. The retrospective release offers a comprehensive overview of Rough Trade's career, spanning from their early beginnings in the late 70s to their final recordings in the early 90s.

The album kicks off with the band's signature hit "High School Confidential," a raucous anthem that still holds up today. From there, the listener is taken on a journey through the band's discography, from the new wave stylings of "Fashion Victim" to the punk rock fury of "All Touch."

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Weapons," a politically charged song that showcases the band's ability to tackle serious issues with their music. The song's urgent lyrics and driving beat make it a standout in Rough Trade's catalog and a highlight of this collection.

About Rough Trade

Canadian band with main members and , who had first performed together in a group called "O" in 1968. By 1973 they had evolved into "Rough Trade" , and they became a popular live act in Toronto featuring raw sexuality and with Pope often performing in bondage attire. Their 1976 studio album "" was the first album by a rock band recorded 'direct to disc', recorded from the studio directly onto the master disc. Peaking at #12 on the Canadian RPM singles chart, controversy helped propel the single "High School Confidential" with its raunchy lesbian theme. By 1983 their chart success had declined, and the band broke up in 1988.

I want to know how she was able to so perfectly capture all these emotions that are accurately felt during the commission of such crimes...I guess that's what makes her faking brilliant!

Here it is, Canada Day 2022. I thought Rough Trade should have 200 songs in the top 200. OK, not reasonable but I'm glad they were represented fine on the list.

I'm also from 1985... And look, it's a long story, how I got here. It really is. And truth be told, I don't even know if I've been looking for it, or really, if it's been looking for me since then, this song. Who can say?

But what I do know? I know that TODAY, thirty-six years later, we finally found each other, and this life-long search that I didn't know that I was on, has, thankfully, come to an end.

Peaked as high as No. 25 on the Canadian Singles Charts in 1980. A good tune, but they still had some better songs than this in my opinion.

Peaked at No. 58 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1983. This band’s only ever U.S. hit single. Great song.
I wonder if Carole Pope and Rough Trade comprehend just how many LGBTQ+ teen suicides they prevented during the 1980s? Including my own.

Almost 40 years on, this still sounds sensational. Bucky Berger is drumming along with the rhythm machine and does such a great job laying down that groove.
I was always of the mind that were Rough Trade based in London, England (versus Toronto, Canada) they might have had a greater level of success, if only because the industry there - media included - played such a prominent role as consumer taste shapers, and I believe they would have taken to the band in a big way.
As Jeff Gay notes below, Rough Trade is more like Grace Jones than the contemporary Canadian bands they were often compared to. They were nothing like Haywire, Kim Mitchell, Rush, Trooper, Harlequin or any of the rest. And maybe that was their drawback - they couldn't be lumped in with the others. Lisa Dalbello was another. Ditto Jane Sibery. Canada has produced some great musicians who have delivered some great music. Unfortunately the record-buying audience isn't always so great when it comes to grasping music that doesn't fit the norm.
